Bata Children Program - Merapi
A Volcano erupted in Jogyakarta area (Central Java) in November 2010,. This devastating event caused the lost of hundreds of lives and a total damage to the area. Housings were burnt, schools were destroyed, forcing the survivors to live temporary in emergency shelters and tent.
Roads were blocked with debris of stones and rocks and as well as land slide, causing trouble to supply for aid.
As a token of give back to Jogyakarta society, Bata Indonesia through it’s Children Program is called to give something for the children in the area. Seeing the facts that many schools were destroyed in the surrounding area due to the cold lava, Bata felt that is it a way to implement the Children’s Program.
We found 1 surviving elementary school that is being used as emergency school to accommodate the students from 4 other schools that were destroyed.
Bata employee raised funds among themselves for one month, and the company it self contributed school shoes for the children. The cash money is used to buy school stationary and 1500 pairs of school shoes were dispatched from the warehouse.
Almost 700 students from 4 elementary school which was destroyed were gathered in the emergency school for the charity event ceremony.. “We, Bata Indonesia, deeply touched by the hurt and lost that Jogya experienced. As a part of the community and society, we felt responsible to give something back to you especially for the children. After all we are one big family here in Bata Indonesia.” said Mr. Errico (Bata Indonesia Company Manager) in his message speech that was delivered by the corporate secretary on his behalf.
